the dejohnette complex

jack dejohnette is one of the great jazz drummers. his early career was highlighted by playing in miles davis' legendary bitches brew sessions. a year or so later, he put together a loose group called the dejohnette complex and made an LP for milestone records. stanley cowell, miroslav vitous, bennie maupin, eddie gomez, and roy haynes all play on it. there are "free jazz" moments and loud, funky moments, but my favorite track is the cowell composition "equipoise". there's this magic somber melodica that just freezes me and makes me listen. 1968. milestone records.
